The Olympic committee has just unveiled the winning design for the Rio 2016 games, from its open invitation in which 76 Brazilian agencies participated. Created by Sao Paolo-based firm Chelles & Hayashi, the design is meant to highlight the warm spirit of the people of Brazil. The segmented body expands, and reveals the integral colors of Brazil when passed between torchbearers. The sky, mountains, sea and earth are all symbolized within the torch, which is physically crafted from recycled aluminum and resin with a satin finish. The torch relay will begin in the Brazilian capital in May and end at Rio’s Maracana stadium in August 2016, when the opening ceremonies progress.
